When Heaven Feels Quiet

A Fatherhood Reflection on Faith, Silence, and Absence

I want to share something I realized during a moment when I was questioning my own faith.

There are times in life when we pray, but we do not feel heard. There are times when we ask God for help, but the silence feels painful. We may begin to wonder if God is listening, if He has forgotten us, or if He has turned away from us.

I have felt that way.

I have questioned whether I should still believe. I have wondered why life can feel so heavy, why suffering continues, and why God sometimes feels so far away when we need Him most.

But then I realized something through the pain of being a father.

Just because I cannot always be physically present with my children does not mean I have forgotten them. Just because I am not always beside my son does not mean I do not love him. In fact, the distance hurts because I love him deeply. My absence does not mean abandonment. My silence does not mean I stopped caring.

And through that, I began to understand something about God.

Maybe when I do not feel His presence, it does not mean He has left me. Maybe when I do not hear an answer right away, it does not mean He has forgotten me. Maybe God is still doing His part as my Heavenly Father, even when I cannot see what He is doing from here on earth.

That realization reminded me that God is still with us.

We may doubt Him because of the things we go through in life. We may feel as if He is not listening. We may feel abandoned, tired, and disappointed. But God has always been with us, even when our pain makes Him feel unseen.

Sometimes it is through suffering, confusion, and even the feeling of being forgotten that we begin to realize God is still there. There is a God unseen, even when we cannot feel Him.

But this realization can only happen when we are honest with ourselves.

We have to admit that sometimes we doubt. We have to admit that we are not always happy with our lives. We suffer. We hurt. We question. We get tired. Not because our faith is fake, but because we are human.

Faith does not mean we are shielded from pain. Being Christian does not mean life will always be easy, perfect, or abundant in the way we expect. It does not mean we will never cry, never question, never feel broken, and never feel alone.

Even Christ knew suffering. He knew sorrow, rejection, loneliness, and anguish. He knew what it meant to cry out to the Father in pain.

So maybe real faith is not pretending that everything is okay.

Maybe real faith is being honest enough to say, 'God, I am hurting. I do not understand. I do not always feel You. But I still do not want to close my heart to You.'

When we accept the truth about both our faith and our doubt, we begin to see something deeper:

God has not forgotten us.

God is still with us.
Even when heaven feels quiet, He is still our Father.
Even when we cannot see Him, He still sees us.
Even when we feel far away, we are not abandoned.
And maybe sometimes, the very pain that made us question God becomes the same place where we finally realize He never left.
