Listen to a conversation exploring false choices, the boundary of personal responsibility, the Win&Win bow metaphor, self-possession, and the man who remains standing regardless of who stays or leaves.

Journal Entry

There are moments in life when a man believes he must choose between two roads.

One road promises hope, but demands that he lose himself to walk it.

The other promises freedom, but only after watching everything he loved burn behind him.

For the longest time, I believed those were my only choices.

I stood between them, trying to decide which pain I could endure.

Fire...

Or water.

Burn...

Or drown.

I thought those were the only paths before me.

Then one day, I realized something.

Those paths were never mine.

They belonged to everyone else's decisions.

I was trying to choose consequences that were created by people other than myself.

So I stopped.

I looked at both roads, smiled to myself, lifted a middle finger toward the choices that never belonged to me...

...and walked away.

Not because I was defeated.

Not because I stopped caring.

But because I finally understood where my responsibility ends.

A man is responsible for his own character.

His own words.

His own decisions.

His own integrity.

He is not responsible for another person's choices.

For years I believed love meant protecting another person from every mistake they might make.

If I warned enough...

If I loved enough...

If I sacrificed enough...

Perhaps I could prevent the pain before it arrived.

But love does not give a man ownership over another person's will.

Every soul must choose.

Every heart must learn.

Every person must carry the weight of their own decisions.

I cannot carry them for them.

Nor should I.

If someone I love chooses a road I would never take...

That road belongs to them.

If they stumble...

The lesson belongs to them.

If they rise...

The victory belongs to them.

Their life was never mine to control.

Only my response ever was.

I think back to my archery bow.

A Win&Win.

The finest bow I had ever owned.

It was so beautiful that I became afraid to use it.

Every shot felt dangerous.

Every movement threatened to scratch the riser.

Every setup risked marking the limbs.

A friend once joked,

You need a vault to keep that bow safe.

Today I understand.

The safest bow is often the one that never fulfills its purpose.

I protected it so much that I almost forgot it was built to shoot arrows.

It isn't the bow that makes the shot.

It isn't the bow that makes an archer.

It is the archer himself.

Relationships are no different.

For too long, I believed losing the relationship meant losing everything.

Now I understand.

It was never the relationship that made me who I am.

It revealed who I was.

If I lose the bow, I remain an archer.

If I lose the relationship, I remain a man.

My character does not disappear because someone walks away.

The man remains.

So today...

I no longer concern myself with choices that are not mine.

I have spent too much of my life carrying responsibilities that never belonged to me.

No longer.

From this day forward, I will own my decisions.

I will accept my consequences.

I will answer for my words.

I will improve my own character.

Everything else belongs to those who choose it.

If life blesses me...

I will stand.

If life wounds me...

I will stand.

If someone stays...

I will stand.

If someone leaves...

I will stand.

Because I finally understand something I should have known all along.

I was never standing because someone else held me up.

I was standing because I never stopped being myself.

So if tomorrow everything goes south...

I still remain standing...

Owning my own self...

Without regrets.

For whatever another person chooses...

That choice belongs to them.

What belongs to me...

Is the man who remains standing.
